How Much Does a Piano Weigh? (with 6 examples)

Pianos are one of the most common and popular instruments in the world. They’re also one of the heaviest instruments out there. Having moved a baby grand piano to a new home before, I can tell you it’s important to know how much a piano weighs. Whether you are moving, or your apartment or an upper floor of your house has a weight limit, you’ll want to have an idea about the weight of your piano.

With many different types of acoustic pianos out there, you’ll want to identify what type of piano you’re dealing with. Here, we’ll breakdown the average weight of a wide range of pianos as well as provide examples to get a more in-depth look.

How Much Does a Piano Weigh?

So, how much does a piano weigh? The average piano weight can range from 350 lbs to upwards of 1,000+ lbs. Let’s look by specific piano type. See below the average piano weights for the following:

Type of PianoAverage Weight
Spinet piano300 lbs (136 kg)
Console piano400 lbs (181 kg)
Studio piano450 lbs (204 kg)
Upright piano750 lbs (340 kg)
Baby grand piano550 lbs (249 kg)
Grand piano700 lbs (317.5 kg)

Parlor grand pianos or concert grand pianos, which are larger than standard grand pianos, will run upwards of 900 to 1,200+ lbs (408 kg – 544+ kg).

Why Are Pianos So Heavy?

Naturally, the piano is just a large instrument. With a large, solid wooden frame to support the soundboard inside (and that sweet acoustic sound), pianos were never going to be a light instrument. On top of that, the ivory keys and metal strings and wooden hammers harbored inside add extra weight. No matter what type of acoustic piano you have, these are the essential (and heavy) components that make up your piano.

Next, we’ll look at specific models of pianos to give you a more precise idea of the weight of a piano.

How Much Does an Upright Piano Weigh?

There are different types of vertical or upright pianos. Upright pianos are well, upright, as opposed to grand pianos that stretch longer instead of taller. Smaller uprights, like the spinet or console piano, are shorter and weigh anywhere from 200-450 lbs. However, studio pianos and standard uprights generally weigh from 450-750+ lbs. The compactness of an upright piano lends it to smaller or more limited spaces. Below are specific examples of each type of piano discussed above.

Baldwin Acrosonic Spinet Piano – 300 to 400 lbs

Spinet pianos are less popular now than they used to be, but many players still own one and may be looking to move it and upgrade to a better piano. Though the spinet piano is not ideal, it’s still a decent instrument and can be a great looking piece of furniture. The Baldwin Acrosonic spinet piano is one of the more popular spinet pianos, and though it is no longer manufactured, it remains popular on the second-hand piano market. It ranges from 300-400 lbs (136-181 kg), depending on the exact model, but is a short piano on the lighter side.

Yamaha b1 Console Piano – 384 lbs

Console pianos are great upright pianos that are still quite compact in size but produce a much better, richer sound than a spinet piano. Sure, they won’t sound as grand as a grand piano, but they are still a great piano for the average, non-professional player. Our favorite is the Yamaha b1 console piano. Standing 43 inches tall (109 cm) and weighing in at 384 lbs (174 kg), it is on the smaller side of console pianos but has all the perks of being a console upright. Its slenderness allows it to be placed just about anywhere. Though you can find pianos with better action and sound, it’s hard to beat the Yamaha b1 at this compact size.

Kawai 907 Designer Studio Upright Piano – 552 lbs

Moving on up from a console piano to a studio piano allows us to get better action still, with larger, now full-size action. Naturally, to produce larger, fuller sounds with more precise action, the piano itself needs to be larger, so this piano will be heavier and taller than a console piano. A studio piano we really like is the Kawai 907 Designer Studio Upright piano. It is 46 ½ inches tall and weighs 552 lbs (250 kg). Not only does it look gorgeous, but this piano goes well in any living area, and though it weighs quite a bit, it’s not so large that you have to be super conscious of its dimensions (as with most other uprights, it’s simply taller than the smaller console piano).

Steinway & Sons Traditional K-52 Upright Piano – 600 lbs

Now, when it comes to the standard, larger upright piano, these generally weigh upwards of 700 lbs, but can easily weigh more. Of course, because it’s larger than other upright or vertical pianos mentioned above, the sound is most close to a grand piano, without taking up as much cubic space. The standard upright piano is certainly the ideal acoustic piano for players that cannot fit a grand piano in their playing space. We think the ultimate upright piano is the Traditional K-52 Upright piano from Steinway & Sons. This is as close as a player can get to playing a grand piano without actually playing one. It stands 52 inches (132 cm tall) and weighs approximately 600 lbs (273 kg).

How Much Does a Grand Piano Weigh?

Typically, a grand piano (depending on the type and model) can weigh anywhere from 550-1,000+ lbs. Of course, a baby grand piano will weigh less than a concert grand piano, as the concert grand piano is about as large a grand piano as you can find. Keep reading to see a few examples of grand piano weights.

Kawai GL-10 Baby Grand Piano

A baby grand piano is on the small side of grand pianos. The baby grand piano is the most popular grand piano for players at home. They’re typically between 60 inches and 65 inches long and weigh anywhere from 500-700 lbs. One I really love and play in my home is the Kawai GL-10 baby grand piano. It is 60 inches (152 cm) long and weighs 622 lbs (282 kg). It is one of the shorter baby grand pianos you can find, but boasts great durability with fine materials and even better action and sound to boot. Its short height also allows it to be placed in practically any room, even with the lid up.

Steinway & Sons Model B Grand Piano

Finally, the standard grand piano. This piano is 67-73 (170-185 cm) inches long and weighs about 700-1,000+ lbs, depending on the model. The grand piano is more commonly used by professional players and can be found in universities too. The Steinway & Sons Model B Classic Grand Piano is one of the finest pianos in the world. It is 83 inches long (211 cm) and weighs 802 lbs (364 kg). Unless performing in a concert hall, the sound and action of this piano is unmatched.

Ultimately, Piano Weight Varies…

Pianos are heavy. But there is quite a range of piano weights. Pianos generally weigh anywhere from 350 lbs to upwards of 1,000 lbs. It all depends on the type of piano and the make and model of the piano.
